Leona DeLay’s First Marriage

Leona married Calvin Stockton in 1905. They had two children, Belle and De. They lived in Anadarko, Oklahoma until the marriage fell apart about 1914. Loney told some of the story to cousin Dayla.

Grandma Loney told me some stories about her time in Anadarko. She was married to the Stockton guy. And she had De and Belle with him. I tried to get some information from her on what kind of man her husband was and all she would say was “He didn’t amount to much”. She had a paint named Caddo who she bought with the money she had from her work as a school teacher. One night the barn caught fire. Her husband was in town doing who knows what but he never came to help. She had Caddo almost out of the barn then he reared up and she lost ahold of him. He ran back into the fire and was burned to death. She wrote her Dad B.B. DeLay and told him she wanted to leave her husband and come home to Glasgow. He sent a train ticket. She packed her kids up and boarded the train to go home. She did tell me one story about the train trip. Some prim and proper ladies were helping her with the children. She told them she was a widow. She laughed and said “if they knew I was leaving my husband the wouldn’t have been so nice!”
