Happiness is a state of mind,
It’s accepting where you are,
Whether in the deepest need
Or reaching for a star.
It isn’t getting what you’d like,
It’s liking what you get.
It isn’t being someone else,
It’s being yourself, and yet—
To find a joy when there IS pain
Or hunger or despair
It takes a strength beyond one’s own,
At least someone to care.
To be content is not to Say
That life should stay the same,
For trying to improve one’s lot
Is more than just a game.
The dreams we dream can lift us up
Until at last we feel
The happiness that we all seek
Is not make-believe, but real.
