Pandemic Charging

Portable Jump Starter. (Amazon $50)

Everyone needs one of these. Karen’s car doesn’t get driven much. A while back, the perfectly good battery wouldn’t stay charged. Our parking spot gives us no opportunity to us an A/C battery charger. This tiny portable jump start unit would get it going again. It charges on a USB cable, will power any USB device (like your phone) and even has a powerful flashlight. Its only down side is that it has to be re-charged every month or so whether or not you use it.

I also got a solar charger that I hung on a fence to help maintain the battery. Like many other modern cars, our Ford has a “Battery Control Module” to protect its sensitive electronics from voltage fluctuations. Unfortunately this system is a pian in the A$$ when you have a car that isn’t used much. If the battery goes dead, or is removed for re-charging/replacement, the system will no longer allow it to fully charge. This could mean a trip to the dealer to reset the system with a dealer diagnostic tool. Fortunately, in our case, there is a hack where drivers can reset the system on their own. On our Ford, just turn on the ignition without starrting the car, pull the Hi-beam switch toward you five times, then step on the brake three times. A light will flash on the dash signifying the Battery Control Monitor has reset itsdelf.

Did I ever tell you how much I miss my ’49 Ford?

  1. I never got a car til I was 23 or so, but I still understand what this is all about. I put off buying “computer cars” as I called them until it was impossible. Even so, I drive a “basic” Yarris, which still has windows you roll down by yourself and no real modern gadgets inside. I’ve had to learn a few hacks myself, though. Thankfully, there are computer videos and articles about every little thing that goes wrong with it. One barely needs a manual anymore! I definitely miss my old cars, too!
