Buffalo Nickel

Buffalo Nickel 1913-1938
Designed by James Earle Fraser

A Nickel ain’t that much,

Just a buffalo you can touch.

I’m sorry, but it’s true,

Your Jefferson won’t do.

Old Iron Tail and Two Moons,

Aren’t seen on Spanish Doubloons.

It’s American through and through,

Big Medicine for me and you.

When buffalo roamed the West,

We were at our best.

Then they all were gone,

Slaughtered before the dawn.

No more to roam the lands,

To nurture native bands.

No tongues for their cuisines,

Just belts for big machines.

That Nickel shows the fall,

Of Sittin’ Bull and Gall.

Where once they roamed the plain,

The bison used to reign.

Someday we will learn,

The Earth’s not ours to burn.

May Wakan Tonka’s* tears,

Bring back those yesteryears.

  1. Nicely done. We get a good memory, a history lesson and a little push in the direction of nature conservancy! Never thought of the nickel being so able to inspire a poem! I love it!
