Lorena

There’s a song about Lorena that tells of long lost love,

The soldiers sing of Lorena, their antebellum dove.

And of leaving sweet Lorena, to march so far away,

Hoping they will see Lorena on some distant day.

All their thoughts were of Lorena, whose love could never fail,

If only that sweet Lorena were with them on the trail.

They would fight for sweet Lorena as they heard the cannon roar,

With memories of Lorena on the bloody fields of war.

At night, dreams are of Lorena as their campfires softly glow,

They all say they love Lorena if only she could know.

All the soldiers love Lorena, the one who waits for them at home,

Each one wants to wed Lorena when they no longer have to roam.

They could lose their sweet Lorena should they hear angels call,

Or if the heart of Lorena should for another finally fall.

Always for their sweet Lorena, their love was burning yet,

But these words were from Lorena, “If we try, we may forget.”

There’s a twang to sweet Lorena like a banjo player’s tune,

If you lose your sweet Lorena, there will be no honeymoon.

The song Sweet Lorena was popular with soldiers on both sides during the Civil War. It tells of the pain of separation. Here’s banjo picker John Hartford’s version of the song. https://youtu.be/z0cdmHXWYr8
