Bell of Freedom

The Liberty Bell is a cherished symbol of American freedom. Cast on its side is the phrase:

“Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.”

The bell is older than our nation. It has rung out for such milestones as the birth of our nation in 1776. It long honored special occasions and important events, like the death of George Washington.

In 1835, something awful happened. The bell cracked. The symbol of our liberty was hopelessly bronen. Would it ever ring true again?

This is America. We fix stuff that is broken. The crack was patched. Maybe it wasn’t the same, but the symbolism was even more striking.

Americans have a way of pulling together in difficult times. Like the Liberty Bell, we have a set of enduring guiding principles called the Constitution. Like the Liberty Bell, the U.S. Constitution and the laws it has spawned are not perfect. We’ve had to fix it dozens of times. We formed a more perfect Union by ending slavery, expanding voting rights, and ensuring equality. Along the way, we preserved that Union and saved the Free World. Twice.

Some may now feel that, like the Liberty Bell, our sacred democracy is fractured. They see threats to voting rights, the Rule of Law, and a dozen other freedoms we’ve long taken for granted.

Freedom cannot be taken for granted. Not even American freedom. We have to work at it. Americans identify problems and find solutions we can agree upon. This means we must be willing to cast aside old assumptions and hidebound ideologies.
